Back up your data today and don’t be an April fool tomorrow
FACT: We’ve created more information in the last two years than in the entirety of recorded history. That’s an awful lot of photos, memories, and important documents.
In this modern day most of us own a computer and a mobile phone which make creating and capturing data quick and easy. It is equally quick and easy to backup our precious data and preserve our memories, yet very few of us do.
What’s a backup?
A backup is simply a duplicate copy of a file – whether it be a family photo, finance spreadsheet, university dissertation, design artwork for a client, your wedding video, supplier contract… basically anything that is important to you, that you couldn’t live without whether it be for sentimental reasons or because they are critical to business operations.
Data loss occurs every day whether through accidental loss or theft, and when it does it can cause major disruption and often upset.
FACT: 113 mobile phones are lost or stolen every minute.
FACT: 1 in 10 computers get infected by viruses every month.
FACT: 30% of us have NEVER backed up.
Today, 31st March, is World Backup Day but really every day should be backup day if we want to protect our valuable data.
Creating a backup is really easy and most people choose to back up their files online somewhere on the internet or on an external hard drive, or both.
You and all that is important to you
When it comes to protecting our personal documents…
Backing up online
There are lots of free online data storage options available including OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive, Amazon Cloud Drive, etc. Perfect for storing the stuff you’re working on right now but there are capacity restrictions so you’ll have to choose the files you back up for free. If you want to save ALL your important documents (smart move!), you’ll want to invest in a proper cloud storage solution – use your preferred search engine to check out all the options available.
Backing up to an external drive
Obviously retrieving your backed up files from the cloud does require internet access, which in an emergency you might not have, so backing up to an external hard drive is also a good idea. Again there are lots of options available, with plenty of reviews and advice available online.
Pledge to protect your prize possessions
Most of us have insurances to protect our physical possessions but few take the same level of care to protect our digital assets, so today on World Backup Day join us in taking the following pledge:
“I solemnly swear to backup my important documents and precious memories on 31st March. I will also tell my friends and family about World Backup Day – friends don’t let friends go without a backup.”
So you didn’t backup and have lost your precious memories? Don’t panic
