Flash memory is a critical component that is supporting dramatic innovation in the auto industry, transforming the car into one of the most connected devices we own.
Cars are now coming with standard smart phone connectivity allowing you to make calls, listen to text messages and stream music via your phone or other device. In car wifi capabilities are also allowing drivers to set up their own in car secure private network turning cars into mobile internet hotspots. Car manufacturers have realised that even value-priced cars need to be connected in order to attract buyers and in-car dash displays are beginning to follow the trends set by tablets and smart phones by offering touch displays and apps.
In car infotainment systems are evolving and the feature list is growing to include:
- Music and audio services.
- Navigation systems, including 3D maps and Google Earth.
- Smartphone/iOS/Android and proprietary applications or apps.
- Automotive system diagnosis.
- Road side assistance.
- Voice commands and hands-free.
- Contextual help/offers.
- Eco-drive analysis.
- Parking apps.
- 4G Wi-Fi hotspots.
- Other services.
The Road Ahead….
A UK trial in Greenwich, Milton Keynes, Bristol and Coventry, backed by the British Government, was confirmed earlier this year. Google also announced last May that its prototype is now fully operational. In Sweden, Volvo already have self-driving cars on the road in Gothenburg, ahead of a trial that will put 100 cars in public hands for a real-world test from 2017.
This is the beginning of the biggest revolution in transport since the Model T opened up car ownership to everyone (the first production Model T left the factory on September 27, 1908). A surprising amount of autonomous technology is already in use, various new cars on the market will now park themselves, the driver only needing to control the accelerator and brake.
